How this tool works

The Age Calculator uses calendar-based date arithmetic to calculate completed years, months, and days between a date of birth and a selected reference date.

Completed years are calculated first. Completed calendar months are then counted from the most recent anniversary date, followed by the remaining number of days.

Total days are calculated using date-only UTC values to reduce errors caused by time zones and daylight-saving transitions. Total weeks, hours, and minutes are derived from the total completed days.

Next-birthday calculations locate the next occurrence of the entered birth month and day. For February 29 birth dates, February 28 is used as the birthday reference during non-leap years for calculator consistency.

Milestone and threshold dates are calculated by adding the selected number of calendar years to the entered date of birth.

Important assumptions

All entered dates are assumed to use the Gregorian calendar.

The calculation uses calendar dates and does not include a time of birth. A day is treated as a date boundary rather than an exact 24-hour period from a recorded birth time.

The “Age on Date” calculation assumes that the selected reference date is on or after the date of birth.

When estimating a date of birth from an entered age, the years, months, and days are subtracted from the reference date. The result is an estimate when the source age has been rounded or stated only in completed years.

For February 29 birth dates, February 28 is used for birthday progress and next-birthday calculations in non-leap years.

Limitations

The Age Calculator provides mathematical date calculations and does not determine legal age, eligibility, retirement entitlement, school admission, insurance status, contractual capacity, or regulatory compliance.

Legal treatment of February 29 birthdays and age thresholds may vary by country, state, organization, contract, and purpose.

Total hours and minutes are derived from completed calendar days and do not account for the precise time of birth, time zones, daylight-saving transitions, or historical calendar changes.

Date-of-birth estimation may differ from an official birth date when the entered age is approximate, rounded, incomplete, or based on a different reference date.

Users should verify official age and eligibility requirements using accepted identity records and the applicable authority.

Frequently asked questions

How is exact age calculated?+

The calculator counts completed calendar years first, then completed calendar months after the most recent birthday, and finally the remaining days.

Why does the calculator not divide total days by 365?+

Calendar years have different lengths because of leap years, and calendar months contain different numbers of days. Using actual calendar boundaries produces a more meaningful age in years, months, and days.

How are February 29 birthdays handled?+

The original birth date remains February 29. During non-leap years, the calculator uses February 28 as the birthday reference for next-birthday and birthday-progress calculations. Legal treatment may differ by jurisdiction.

Can I calculate age on a past or future date?+

Yes. Select Age on Date, enter the date of birth, and choose any valid reference date on or after the birth date.

Can I compare two ages?+

Yes. Compare Ages shows the age of each person or record on the selected reference date, identifies the older birth date, and displays the exact age gap.

Can I calculate when someone turns 18, 21, or 60?+

Yes. Select Legal-Age Date, enter the date of birth, and enter any target age from 0 to 150. The result is a mathematical threshold date and does not determine legal eligibility.

Does PMNM store entered birth dates?+

The calculations run locally in the browser. Birth dates and calculated age details do not need to be submitted to WordPress. Recent history is stored only in the current browser and can be cleared.
