How this tool works

The Ratio Calculator applies standard ratio, proportion, scaling, and cross-multiplication methods based on the selected calculation mode.

Simplifying a Ratio

For whole-number ratios, the calculator finds the greatest common divisor of all ratio terms.

Every term is divided by that divisor:

Simplified Ratio =
Each Original Term ÷ Greatest Common Divisor

For example:

Original Ratio = 12:18:30

Greatest Common Divisor = 6

Simplified Ratio = 2:3:5

Equivalent Ratios

An equivalent ratio is produced by multiplying every term by the same scale factor:

Equivalent Ratio =

For example:

3:5 × 4 = 12:20

Finding a Missing Term

For the proportion:

a:b = c:x

Cross multiplication gives:

a × x = b × c

Therefore:

x = (b × c) ÷ a

Dividing an Amount in a Ratio

The ratio terms are first added:

Ratio Sum = Term 1 + Term 2 + ... + Term n

Each proportional share is then calculated as:

Each ratio term is divided by the sum of all terms:

Whole-number dimensions are simplified using their greatest common divisor:

When a new width is entered, the corresponding height is calculated as:

The map distance and resulting real distance initially use the same base unit. Any subsequent unit conversion must be performed separately.

Comparing Two Ratios

Two ratios are equivalent when their cross products are equal:

a:b = c:d

when:

a × d = b × c

All calculations are performed locally in the browser. Results retain useful decimal precision while unnecessary trailing zeros are removed.

Important assumptions

Ratio terms represent comparable quantities.
Quantities in a ratio use compatible units.
Multi-part ratios may be entered using colons, commas, spaces, or semicolons.
Simplification is performed on whole-number ratio terms.
At least one term in a ratio must be non-zero.
Ratios containing negative values are accepted only where mathematically meaningful for the selected calculation.
Ratio-to-percentage and proportional-division modes require non-negative ratio terms.
The total of all ratio terms must be greater than zero when calculating proportional shares.
Equivalent ratios are created by multiplying every term by the same positive scale factor.
Missing-term calculations assume that the two ratios form a valid proportion.
Dividing an amount in a ratio assumes that the entire amount is distributed among the entered ratio terms.
Recipe and mixture scaling assumes that the entered ratio accurately represents the relative quantity of every component.
Part-to-whole calculations assume that the part does not exceed the whole.
Aspect-ratio simplification requires whole-number width and height values.
Aspect-ratio calculations assume that the image, screen, or object is scaled proportionally without cropping or distortion.
Map-scale calculations assume a representative fraction in the form 1:n.
Map and real-world distances initially use the same unit.
Decimal results may be rounded for display while internal calculations retain greater precision.
A maximum of 20 terms may be entered in one multi-part ratio.

Limitations

The Ratio Calculator provides general mathematical results for informational, educational, planning, and convenience purposes.

Results may be unsuitable when:

Ratio quantities use different or incompatible units;
Entered values are inaccurate;
A ratio represents rounded source data;
A physical mixture changes in volume or mass when ingredients are combined;
Real-world waste, tolerance, or measurement uncertainty must be included;
An image is cropped rather than proportionally resized;
A map projection introduces scale distortion;
A drawing uses different horizontal and vertical scales; or
A proportion is assumed where no proportional relationship exists.

Ratio simplification is limited to whole-number terms. Decimal ratios may first need to be converted into equivalent whole-number terms.

Recipe and mixture results do not account for ingredient density, evaporation, expansion, shrinkage, wastage, packaging size, or minimum practical measurements.

The map-scale mode calculates a mathematical scale relationship only. It does not account for terrain, route curvature, elevation, map projection, or differences between straight-line and travel distance.

The aspect-ratio mode preserves the mathematical proportion of the entered dimensions. It does not determine whether the calculated dimensions meet platform requirements, resolution standards, print quality, or file-size limits.

Ratio-to-percentage results may total slightly above or below 100% when displayed values are rounded.

The calculator should not be used as the only basis for engineering, construction, medical, pharmaceutical, scientific, navigation, safety-critical, or regulatory work. Important results should be verified using authoritative specifications or qualified professional guidance.
