What the Farm Fuel Cost Calculator does

Different operations consume very differently. Deep ploughing with a mould board plough can use six litres an acre; a spray pass uses barely one. Multiplying each operation by the number of passes gives a season total that is usually higher than farmers expect.

The ownership comparison matters for smaller holdings. A tractor costs the same in depreciation and interest whether it works ten acres or a hundred, so utilisation decides whether owning beats hiring.

What your result means

Litres per acre is the figure to track season on season. A rise usually signals a tractor needing service, a blunt implement or deeper working than necessary.

The break-even acreage is the honest test of tractor ownership. Below it, the ownership cost per acre exceeds what hiring would cost, and doing custom work for neighbours is the usual way to close the gap.

Important considerations

  • Reducing tillage passes is the single largest diesel saving available. Zero-tillage drills for wheat after paddy are well established in north India and cut both fuel and time.
  • A blunt or badly adjusted implement increases draft and fuel consumption noticeably. Sharpening and correct depth setting matter.
  • Tractor servicing — air filter, fuel filter, injector calibration — affects consumption directly. A clogged air filter can raise it 10% or more.
  • Working at the right gear and throttle setting for the load saves fuel; running at full throttle for light work wastes it.
  • Diesel prices vary by state because of differing state taxes, and are higher at highway pumps than at rural bulk suppliers.
  • Ownership cost should include depreciation, insurance, repairs and interest — not just the loan EMI.

Limitations of this tool

  • Consumption figures are typical values for common implements. Soil type, moisture, depth and tractor horsepower all change them substantially.
  • It counts diesel only. Operator wages, repairs during the season and implement wear are not included.
  • The ownership comparison uses a simple annual cost divided by acres worked, rather than a full machinery costing.

Typically 5–7 litres for deep ploughing with a mould board plough, and 3–4 litres for harrowing. Heavy or dry soil pushes it higher; light soil lower.
