Small Business tools

Break-even, margins, GST, quotes and staff costs. 9 free business tools.

Most small-business questions reduce to four numbers: what it costs you, what you charge, how many you sell, and what is left. These tools cover the everyday version of that arithmetic for Indian shops, restaurants, salons, contractors and service businesses — including the GST-inclusive vs GST-exclusive confusion that quietly wrecks margins on quotations.

When these tools are useful

  • You need monthly break-even sales before you commit to a rent or a hire.
  • You are quoting a job and want to price the margin in rather than discover it later.
  • You want the true monthly cost of an employee, not just their salary.
  • You are setting menu or service prices from ingredient and time costs.

Small Business — common questions

Is margin the same as markup?

No, and confusing them is expensive. Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a percentage of selling price. A 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin. The Margin vs Markup tool converts between them.

Do these tools file or calculate my GST return?

No. They compute GST amounts on individual prices and invoices for planning and quoting. They are not a return-filing tool and do not handle input tax credit, reverse charge or place-of-supply rules.

Which costs count as fixed?

Costs that do not change with the number of units you sell this month — rent, salaries, internet, licence fees, loan EMIs. Costs that scale per unit sold — raw material, packaging, payment gateway fees, commissions — are variable.
