What the Road Trip Fuel Cost Calculator does

The arithmetic is simple — distance divided by mileage, multiplied by fuel price — but two things routinely make estimates wrong. The first is using claimed mileage rather than your own tank-to-tank figure. The second is forgetting tolls, which on a long national highway route can approach a third of the fuel cost.

The per-person figure matters when comparing against a train. Driving costs are fixed per vehicle, so a car with four people usually beats four train tickets, while a car with one rarely does.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the one-way distance and tick the return option if you are coming back the same way.
  2. Enter your own mileage — the figure from filling the tank, resetting the trip meter and filling again. Not the brochure number.
  3. Enter the current fuel price at your local pump.
  4. Set a load penalty. A fully loaded car with the air conditioning on typically loses 8–15% of its mileage.
  5. Add tolls for one leg and the number of people, then optionally compare against a train or bus fare.

Using brochure mileage of 16 km/l without a load penalty would have understated the fuel cost by around ₹800, and ignoring tolls by another ₹1,800.

What your result means

Cost per kilometre is the most portable figure. Once you know your car runs at around ₹9 a kilometre all-in, any trip can be estimated in your head.

Per person is what decides between driving and taking a train. Four people in a car is usually cheaper; one person driving alone almost never is.

Fuel as a share of total is worth noting. On expressway routes tolls can be 20–30% of the trip cost, and estimates that ignore them are meaningfully wrong.

Important considerations

  • Highway mileage is typically better than city mileage — often by 20–30% — so a long trip may do better than your everyday average.
  • Air conditioning costs roughly 5–10% of mileage; a roof carrier or heavy luggage adds more.
  • FASTag statements from a previous trip on the same route are the most reliable source for toll costs.
  • Fuel prices vary by state because of differing state taxes. Filling up before crossing into a higher-tax state genuinely saves money on a long trip.
  • This counts running cost only. Depreciation, servicing, tyres and insurance add several rupees per kilometre to the true cost of driving.
  • For an electric vehicle, charging at home is far cheaper than at a highway fast charger — enter the rate you will actually pay.

Limitations of this tool

  • It assumes a constant mileage for the whole trip. Terrain, traffic and driving style all change it in practice.
  • It excludes depreciation, maintenance, tyres and insurance, which are real costs of driving but not out-of-pocket on the day.
  • Toll costs must be entered manually, since they vary by route, vehicle class and time of day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide the total distance by your car's real mileage to get the litres needed, then multiply by the fuel price. Add tolls and parking for the true trip cost.

Should I use the mileage claimed by the manufacturer?

No. Claimed figures come from standardised test conditions. Use your own tank-to-tank measurement, and apply a load penalty for a full car with the air conditioning running.

Is driving cheaper than the train in India?

For three or more people, usually yes, because driving costs are fixed per vehicle while fares are per head. For one or two people the train is generally cheaper and often faster over long distances.

How much does air conditioning affect mileage?

Typically 5–10%, and more in heavy traffic where the engine idles. Combined with a full load, a 10–15% total penalty is a reasonable assumption.
