What the Passport & Exam Photo Resizer does

Two requirements have to be met at once. Pixel dimensions are fixed by the portal — 413 × 531 for a 35 × 45 mm passport photograph at 300 DPI, 200 × 230 for many bank examinations. File size has to sit inside a band, commonly 20 to 50 KB.

Meeting both means re-encoding the image as JPEG at a quality level that produces a file just under the limit. This tool searches for that quality automatically, and reduces dimensions only if quality alone cannot get there — so you always get the largest, sharpest file that still fits.

How to use this tool

How the exact size is achieved

1. Draw the photo onto a canvas of the required pixel dimensions, either fitted inside (no distortion) or cropped to fill. 2. Encode as JPEG and binary-search the quality setting: try a quality, measure the resulting file size, and narrow the range until the largest file under the limit is found. 3. If even the lowest quality exceeds the limit, scale the canvas down and repeat. Result: the largest file that still fits under your KB limit.

Targeting just under the maximum matters. A 12 KB file where 50 KB is allowed is needlessly degraded, and some portals reject files below a stated minimum.

Worked example

Example: a 4 MB phone photo for a 20–50 KB form

Just under the 50 KB ceiling and comfortably above the 20 KB floor, which is exactly what the portal expects.

What your result means

The reported file size is what the portal will see. If it shows 47 KB against a 50 KB limit, the upload will pass.

If the result lands below the minimum, the original image has too little detail to fill the file at that pixel size. Use a sharper original rather than trying to inflate the file.

The quality percentage tells you how much compression was needed. Below about 60% you may see visible artefacts, which usually means the KB limit is tight for the pixel dimensions requested.

Important considerations

Photograph requirements go beyond size. Most Indian forms specify a plain white or light background, the face occupying roughly 70–80% of the frame, both ears visible, no spectacles glare and a neutral expression.
Several examinations require the photograph to have been taken within a stated period, and some require the date printed on it. Read the notification.
Take the photograph against a plain wall in even daylight. Phone portrait mode blurs the background, which portals often reject.
This tool resizes and compresses. It does not crop to centre the face — crop the original first if the framing is wrong.
Keep the original file. If a portal rejects the upload, you will need to try different dimensions.
Preset values are provided for convenience. Specifications change between notification cycles, so confirm the current requirement before uploading.

Limitations of this tool

It cannot verify that your photograph meets background, framing or recency requirements — only the technical size.
Output is always JPEG. Forms requiring PNG or a specific colour profile are not supported.
Very small KB limits at large pixel dimensions may be unachievable without visible quality loss; the tool will tell you when it cannot reach the target.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read by your browser using FileReader and processed on a canvas element on your own device. Nothing is transmitted, nothing is stored, and closing the tab discards everything.

How do I make a photo exactly 50 KB?

Set the maximum to 50 KB and the tool searches for the JPEG quality that produces the largest file under that limit. It will typically land at 46–49 KB, which is what portals expect.

What size is a passport photo in pixels?

A 35 × 45 mm photograph at 300 DPI is 413 × 531 pixels. Many Indian examination portals use different values — 200 × 230 and 350 × 450 are both common — so check the notification.

Why was my photo rejected even at the right size?

Size is only one requirement. Background colour, face proportion, image sharpness, spectacles glare and how recently the photograph was taken are all checked. This tool handles the technical size; the rest is down to the photograph itself.

Can I use a phone photo?

Yes, provided it is taken against a plain light background in even lighting, with the face filling most of the frame and portrait mode switched off. Crop it square-ish before resizing if the framing is loose.
