PDF to Word

Get an editable Word file from a PDF — text and paragraphs, not the layout.

Most free PDF-to-Word converters upload your document to a server. This one does not — and because of that it is limited in ways worth stating plainly before you use it: you get the text, the paragraph breaks and the page breaks in an editable Word file, but not the original layout.

Your file never leaves your device. The PDF is read and converted by JavaScript running in this tab. Nothing is uploaded.

What the PDF to Word does

The reason has nothing to do with effort. A PDF stores positioned glyphs — this character, this font, at these coordinates. It does not store paragraphs, columns, tables or styles. Converting back to Word means inferring all of that, and doing it well requires layout analysis that commercial services run on servers.

What this tool does instead is honest and useful: extract the text properly, preserve line and page structure, and produce a genuine Word-readable file you can edit. It is not a rename of a PDF, and it is not a promise of a perfect reconstruction.

How to use this tool

  1. Select your PDF and press Convert to Word.
  2. Download the .doc file and open it in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs.
  3. Reapply headings and styles — the text is all there, the formatting is not.
  4. If the file is a scan, run OCR first; there is no text to convert otherwise.

What converts and what does not

CONVERTS All selectable text Paragraph and line breaks Page breaks, preserved between pages A genuinely editable Word file DOES NOT CONVERT Fonts, sizes, bold, italics, colour Tables — cells become separate paragraphs Images, charts and logos Columns, text boxes, headers and footers as such A PDF stores positioned glyphs, not document structure. Reconstructing that structure is what browsers cannot do.

Worked example

Example: a 6-page letter

Textfully preserved, editable

Page breakspreserved
Letterhead imagelost
Signature block layoutbecomes plain paragraphs

For a text-based letter or report this is genuinely useful. For a designed brochure it is not the right tool.

What your result means

You get the words back, editable. That is the useful part, and for most conversions it is what people actually need.

You will need to reapply formatting. Budget a few minutes for headings and spacing on a long document.

If the layout matters more than the text, editing the original source document is the better route — or a paid desktop tool with proper layout analysis.

Important considerations

  • The output is a .doc file using Word-compatible HTML, which Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs all open natively. It is a real document, not a renamed PDF.
  • Scanned PDFs produce nothing, because there is no text layer. OCR first.
  • Tables are the biggest loss. If a document is mostly tables, extracting to text and rebuilding them may be faster than fixing the conversion.
  • Complex multi-column layouts interleave, since text is read by vertical position.
  • No paid API is used and nothing is uploaded, which is the trade-off being made for the layout limitations.

Limitations of this tool

  • Scanned PDFs contain no text layer and produce nothing. OCR is required for those.
  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened without the password.
  • Multi-column layouts interleave, because text is read by vertical position across the page.
  • Formatting, fonts, tables, images and columns are not reconstructed.
  • Output is .doc (Word-compatible HTML) rather than true .docx with full style definitions.
  • A perfect PDF-to-Word conversion is not achievable client-side; anything claiming otherwise is either using a server or overstating the result.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the formatting lost?

Because a PDF does not store it. It records where each character sits, not that a line is a heading or that a block is a table. Rebuilding that requires layout analysis which commercial converters run on servers — this tool works entirely on your device instead.

Is the output a real Word file?

Yes. It is a .doc file in Word-compatible HTML, which Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs open and edit natively. It is not a renamed PDF.

Why does my scanned PDF convert to an empty document?

Because it contains images of pages, not text. Run it through OCR first to generate a text layer.

Will tables survive?

No. Table cells become separate paragraphs. For table-heavy documents, extracting the text and rebuilding the tables is usually quicker than correcting the conversion.

Is a perfect conversion possible anywhere?

Commercial services do noticeably better because they run layout analysis on servers, and even they struggle with complex documents. Any free browser tool promising a perfect result is overstating what it does.
