What the PDF File Size Checker does
Operating systems disagree about file sizes. Windows reports binary megabytes, where 1 MB is 1,048,576 bytes; some systems and most upload limits use decimal megabytes, where 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. A file that looks like 4.9 MB in one place can be over a 5 MB limit in another.
This tool shows the exact byte count, which is unambiguous, alongside binary KB and MB — and tells you exactly how much over a limit you are when you exceed one.
How to use this tool

How file sizes are calculated
Worked example
Example: a file near a 2 MB limit

A file displayed as "2 MB" by a file manager is over a 2 MB limit. Knowing it is 51 KB over tells you a small quality reduction will be enough.
What your result means
The byte count is the only unambiguous figure. Use it when a limit is tight.
"Too large by X" tells you how aggressive the compression needs to be. Fifty kilobytes over is a small adjustment; two megabytes over needs a different approach.
If you are close to a limit, aim to land 10% under it rather than just beneath, since some portals count the encoded upload rather than the raw file.
Important considerations
- Binary and decimal megabytes differ by about 5%. When a portal states a limit without specifying, assume the stricter binary interpretation.
- Email attachment limits apply after encoding, which adds roughly 33% to the size. A 20 MB file will not attach to a 25 MB limit reliably.
- The quickest size reductions for a scanned PDF are lower image resolution and fewer pages, not clever compression.
- Splitting a document into parts is often more practical than compressing it heavily, when the portal accepts multiple uploads.
- This tool reads only the file size and does not parse the document, so it works on encrypted and damaged PDFs too.
Limitations of this tool
- It reports size only. To find out what is making a file large, use the page counter and image extractor.
- It cannot know which unit convention a particular portal uses; when a limit is tight, aim comfortably under it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my file show a different size elsewhere?
Because of binary versus decimal megabytes. Windows shows binary (1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes); many websites use decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The byte count shown here is exact and unambiguous.
My PDF is just over the limit — what is the quickest fix?
