What the Semester Grade What-If Simulator does

Every subject contributes its credits multiplied by its grade point. A 4-credit subject at grade 9 contributes 36 points; a 2-credit subject at grade 10 contributes 20. That weighting is why spending the last week before exams on a high-credit subject usually beats spreading the effort evenly.

Enter the grades you realistically expect, then change one and watch the result. The contribution table ranks subjects by how much a single grade point in each would shift your SGPA.

How to use this tool

  1. Add one row per subject, with the credits listed in your syllabus.
  2. Enter the grade point you expect for each. On a 10-point scale, O or A+ is 10, A is 9, B+ is 8, B is 7, C is 6.
  3. Add more rows if you have more subjects, or remove the ones you do not need.
  4. Optionally enter your CGPA and total credits before this semester to see where the new CGPA lands.
  5. Change one grade at a time and watch the SGPA — that is the fastest way to see where effort pays off.

Formula and method

Worked example

Example: four subjects

Operating Systems — 4 credits, grade 832 points
Mathematics — 3 credits, grade 721 points
Economics — 3 credits, grade 824 points

Raising Mathematics from 7 to 9 adds 0.43 to the SGPA. Raising Economics by the same two points adds the same, but raising either 4-credit subject by two points adds 0.57 — the credit weighting decides.

What your result means

The SGPA is this semester's result alone. It feeds into CGPA weighted by the credits it carries.

The weight column tells you where effort is best spent. A subject at 29% weight moves your SGPA nearly three times as much as one at 10%.

The CGPA line shows the real consequence. Late in a programme, even an excellent semester shifts CGPA by only a small fraction — which is the argument for starting strong rather than planning to recover.

Important considerations

  • Grade point mapping varies between universities. Confirm whether your institution awards 10 for O and 9 for A, or uses a different scale.
  • Some universities exclude audit courses, non-credit courses and certain electives from SGPA. Leave those out.
  • A backlog usually blocks progression regardless of SGPA. Passing every subject matters more than optimising the average.
  • Laboratory and project credits often carry substantial weight and are frequently easier to score in than theory papers.
  • If your university uses relative grading, your grade depends on the class distribution rather than only your marks.

Limitations of this tool

  • It projects from the grades you enter. It cannot predict what you will actually score.
  • It uses a simple credit-weighted average and does not model relative grading, grade caps on repeat attempts, or subjects excluded from SGPA.
  • The percentage shown uses the 9.5 rule as a convenience — use the CGPA to percentage converter for your university's actual formula.

Frequently asked questions

How is SGPA calculated?

Multiply each subject's credits by its grade point, add them all up, and divide by the total credits. It is a weighted average, not a simple one.

Which subject should I focus on before exams?

The one with the highest credits where you have the most room to improve. The contribution table above ranks subjects by exactly that effect.

Does SGPA include internal marks?

Indirectly. Internal assessment usually forms part of the total marks that determine the grade for each subject, and it is the grade that enters the SGPA calculation.

What is a good SGPA?

Above 8 is generally considered strong in Indian universities, and most campus placement cut-offs sit between 6 and 7.5. What counts as good depends on your programme and what you are aiming for next.
