About this tool

Converting a JPG to PNG is worth doing when you need a lossless copy to edit, or when something insists on PNG. It is worth knowing before you start that the file will almost certainly get bigger — often two to five times — because PNG stores every pixel exactly instead of compressing them away.

Your images never leave your device. Each file is decoded by your browser, drawn to a canvas and re-encoded in the new format in memory. Nothing is uploaded, which matters when the image is an ID document, a signature or a private photograph.

What the JPG to PNG does

JPG throws away detail to make files small, and does it again every time you re-save. PNG never does: it is lossless, so what goes in comes out. Converting JPG to PNG does not recover the detail the JPG already lost — that is gone for good — but it stops any further loss, which matters if the image is about to be edited and re-saved several times.

PNG also supports transparency, so a converted image can have areas erased afterwards in an editor. The conversion itself does not create transparency; it just makes it possible.

What actually happens

1. The browser decodes the JPG into pixels. 2. Those pixels are drawn to a canvas. 3. The canvas is encoded as PNG — losslessly. Detail the JPG already discarded is not recovered. A PNG made from a JPG is a perfect copy of an imperfect image. Typical size change for a photograph: 2 MB JPG → 6–10 MB PNG

What your result means

A larger file is expected here, not a fault. PNG is lossless.

Quality is unchanged — the conversion adds no loss of its own.

If you wanted a smaller file, you want JPG to WebP instead.

Things to watch out for

  • Only convert photographs to PNG when a system demands it. For everything else the JPG is the better file.
  • PNG is the right format for screenshots, logos, diagrams, and any image with sharp edges or flat colour.
  • Converting JPG to PNG does not undo JPG compression artefacts. They are baked into the pixels.
  • If you need transparency, you still have to erase the background in an image editor afterwards.
  • For upload limits, use the KB optimiser, which targets a file size directly.

Limitations of this tool

  • JPG detail already lost cannot be recovered — no tool can do that.
  • Images are capped at 8000 px on the longest side.
  • Animated formats are not supported; a single frame is produced.
  • EXIF metadata, including camera details and GPS location, is not carried across — which is usually a benefit.
