About this tool

WebP produces noticeably smaller files than JPG at the same visible quality — commonly 25–35% smaller. If you run a website, that is a direct improvement to load time. If you are uploading to a portal, check it accepts WebP first, because many Indian government sites still do not.

Your images never leave your device. Each file is decoded by your browser, drawn to a canvas and re-encoded in the new format in memory. Nothing is uploaded, which matters when the image is an ID document, a signature or a private photograph.

What the JPG to WebP does

WebP is a Google format now supported by every current browser. It compresses more efficiently than JPG at the same perceived quality, and unlike JPG it can also store transparency.

The trade-off is compatibility outside the browser. Some older desktop software, printers and government upload forms still reject it. For a website it is the better choice; for an application form, use JPG.

Where the saving comes from

WebP uses better prediction and entropy coding than JPG, so at the same perceived quality it needs fewer bytes. Typical result for a photograph at equivalent quality: JPG 850 KB WebP 560 KB → about 34% smaller The saving is largest on photographs and smallest on images that were already heavily compressed. Note: converting an existing JPG re-encodes it, so a little quality is lost. Convert from the original where you can.
